I noticed a strange thing: Some people whose mother tongue isn’t English often say “alphabet”, when they actually mean “letter”. Examples:
- A website about Sidama Language and Culture says that in order to write and read Sidama language 30 alphabets are needed.
- A Malayalam speaker finds that some of the Georgian alphabets are identical while others are similar to their alphabets. It’s quite true – the shapes of Malayalam letters and Georgian letters are quite similar, although they are hardly related.
I saw many more examples of this, although i can’t recall where.
